A collection of artefacts

The Unkai Maru was an old, medium-sized, coal-burning freighter that was built in England in 1905.  The ship is 93 metres long and lies upright at about 40 metres in the Sixth Fleet Anchorage off the northern end of Uman Island.

I followed my guide into Hold 4 and then into Hold 5 which were both empty except for the tunnel for the drive shaft. I then swam to the stern and examined the antiquated external steering mechanism. I returned along the deck and met Neil and Paul as they emerged from the engine room. The superstructure is quite bare as it was completely burned out before the ship sank.

The bow section is the most interesting part of the ship with a three inch gun, forecastle with a room containing numerous artefacts
