After an early lunch of
chicken, salad, soft drink and Mars Bars, we found some more superb
conditions near the big bommie at Flat Rock.
We entered the water in a big
group and swam down into a circular area like an arena that
the locals call “The Bowl”. On the seaward side of the bowl, I looked for
the “V” shaped gully, a deep cleft in the rock close to the bommie. There it
was, running south to the edge of the rock and opening out into a spectacular
vista with a steep drop to over 30 metres. We saw kingfish and mackerel out in the blue,
and smaller territorial reef fish around the rocks and boulders that form the
wall.
During the dive, we found a
big turtle asleep at the end of a gully with his head and half his shell
in a cave. Bill was rewarded with a few minutes of deco time for going
down to have a closer look. We explored under the big boulders on the outside of the bommie, then crossed to the anchor line for
a nice slow ascent.
